The research interests of Ghonem's group are in testing and mechanistic modeling of deformation and damage mechanisms of engineering metals, alloys and metal matrix composites subjected to extreme loading conditions including high temperature, impact loading and high strain rate in controlled environment. His research has been sponsored by many government and industrial agencies including USAFOSR, NASA, NRC Canada, Titanium Metals Corporation, SNECMA (France), P&W and GE. His current work focuses on Nickel based superalloys, titanium alloys and low-carbon steel in both coarse and ultrafine grained microstructures subjcted to extreme temperature and strain rate loading condition.
